The digitization of Polish businesses is proceeding slowly, and to make matters worse, its pace has noticeably slowed in the past year. Basic use of digital technologies is declared by only 40 percent of companies in the SME segment, and the use of more advanced solutions is even rarer. The solution to the problem, at least in part, may be simple platforms for financial and records management.

Poland ranked a distant 24th in the European Commission's Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI 2022). In terms of the use of digital solutions in companies, only Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania fared worse. To make matters worse, the index for the integration of IT solutions in companies has dropped from 25.9 to 22.9 points in the last year. These results could hinder the achievement of the goals set out in the EU's Digital Compass document. It stipulates that by 2030 a basic level of digitization should be achieved by at least 90 percent of European companies.
Cost, time and difficulties
There are at least several reasons for the delay in digitization. The most significant, of course, is money, as many companies in the SME segment simply cannot afford to purchase advanced digital solutions. Besides, it is not only the software itself that is expensive, but also the necessary infrastructure and IT specialists. Entrepreneurs are also often concerned about the implementation process, which can cause production delays or lead to the loss of valuable data. These concerns, however, in many cases are not justified.
Small platforms for small businesses
This is because small companies do not always need "large" programs, such as complex ERP systems. Yes, they allow handling many processes (production, logistics, CRM, HR or accounting), but their functionality often exceeds the needs of SME entities.
In many cases, simple platforms that allow management of company finances and records may be sufficient. The most important for most companies are functions related to signing contracts, payments and invoice circulation. Daily work will also be facilitated by the ability to verify contractors remotely and make quick payments without logging into the banking system. It is also important that the application provides accountants with free access to the entrepreneur's documents and is adapted to the latest regulations - both national and European.
In companies that still work with traditional paper documentation, the use of even the simplest digital solutions will significantly streamline work and can be the first step towards implementing more advanced solutions in the future. In the long term, it will also determine the increase of competitive advantage.
